Did you have any pets growing up?

Image
Yes several cats and dogs. All my cats were named Tuffy. I think I had 4. One would die and we would replace it with another. Nothing special just stripped kittens all gray and black strips. Now the dogs were different one was a Labrador the next a boxer and a cocker spaniels all very special! Frisky was the Lab all black and very sweet and loving   ( my favorite) then we have pepper the boxer ( very dumb ) not a favorite of course. Then there was Raffles the cocker spaniel very cute my dad had won him in a raffle so we named him Raffles very smart dog. I was very fortunate to have pets as I grew up.

What were your favorite toys as a child?

When I was about 3yrs old I remember I had a great little train set with an electronic engine. ( I think I loved my train because it always reminded me of my Grandpa Gib he was an engineer on the Union Pacific Railroad ). I always got new baseball gloves and basketballs for my birthdays. (Because I loved to play both baseball basketball). But one of My best remembered toys was a pellet gun and a BB rifle it let me play with my older brothers in war games. We took it very serious and shot each other with pellets and BB’s. (That way you could not say ya Missed me). I still think about my brother Pat getting a new pocket knife   he got one of our neighbors to stand up in front our shed with arms out and he would throw the knife to try to stick it in the shed not the neighbor he missed. That’s what I mean we played serious

What was your first boss like?

The first boss I had was when I was 15. I went to work at an A&W across the street from the Huntridge Theatre on Charleston Blvd. He was a terrible guy he lied to me from the very first day. Each day I came to work (part time) and he would promised me a full time position. He had me do every bad assignment at the store and they were bad , scrubbing floors, cleaning out A&W bottles, and cutting onions for burgers. He never assigned me regular hours but just told me to call him in the morning to see if he needed me that day. He paid me in cash but took out the taxes which he never paid to the IRS. When I got my job at the end of summer at the Mint Hotel he called me and was upset I never called him to let him know I wasn’t coming back! Later in the year I took DeEtte to the drive up and had a burger the onions were cut wrong got a lot of satisfaction out of that since he always told me to do a better job and cut them smaller. The only good thing about this jerk was I learned to u...

What was your first big trip?

My first big trip was the one we looked forward to the most. We were getting ready to turn 40. I got us tickets to go to Hawaii for a week. Up until that time we were only able to get away for three days max. We went and had a great time! DeEtte had always wanted to go to Hawaii but we could never find the time or money to make it happen. Somebody had won a one week trip at one of the casinos and wanted to sell it (I saw his ad in the paper called him and made the deal. 7 days in beautiful Hawaii flight and room included . Mom always says I feel in love with the islands , because we went back every year for the next 10 years. We even made it a Christmas gift for all the kids and took them with us on one trip. Actually we went with our family on several trips. They also feel in love with the islands. Our favorite island is Kauai always had a good time never disappoints!

What's a small decision you made that ended up having a big impact on your life?

Actually there are two small decisions that changed my life and the lives of my family. The first one was the decision to go to work for Collins Foods in Los Angeles.( at the time I made this decision I was working at the Mint Hotel and had been there for 7 years in a very secure job ) I saw an ad in the newspaper for trainees to run Sizzler Steak Houses. I took the interview and they gave me an aptitude test. I scored higher than any of the others for the position and was offered the job. The only problem was I had to be in Los Angeles in just two weeks! We owned a house and had two small children at the time. I told DeEtte that we needed to sell the house and find a place to live in California in less than fourteen days. She got on the band wagon and we did just that. In two weeks we packed up all we had including Jeff and Jennifer and moved to the state of California. However, because of that move and the training and education that I received I learned how to run a business (...

What were your grandparents like?

That’s a long  story . My mother’s parents disowned her after she married my father. I only met my maternal grandmother once when I was about 10 years old when she came to Las Vegas. She was only visiting my mom to have her sign off on her father’s will. My grandparents on my fathers side is another  story . My real grandfather died before I was born my grandmother was a widow for 14 years when she was remarried. Her new husband married her when I was a baby. Gib was the only grandpa I knew. Grandma and him would come to Vegas at least once a year. This is the man that taught me how to be a good father and grandfather. I still remember being so excited when I knew they were coming to town. I would run home from school so I could be there first before my brothers. My grandpa was always taking me to prize fights and telling me about his trips on the trains he drove. He was an engineer for the Union Pacific railroad. One time I remember I was about 6 years old my mom took me down...
