What's a small decision you made that ended up having a big impact on your life?
Actually there are two small decisions that changed my life and the lives of my family. The first one was the decision to go to work for Collins Foods in Los Angeles.( at the time I made this decision I was working at the Mint Hotel and had been there for 7 years in a very secure job ) I saw an ad in the newspaper for trainees to run Sizzler Steak Houses. I took the interview and they gave me an aptitude test. I scored higher than any of the others for the position and was offered the job. The only problem was I had to be in Los Angeles in just two weeks! We owned a house and had two small children at the time. I told DeEtte that we needed to sell the house and find a place to live in California in less than fourteen days. She got on the band wagon and we did just that. In two weeks we packed up all we had including Jeff and Jennifer and moved to the state of California. However, because of that move and the training and education that I received I learned how to run a business ( food or real estate).
The second decision was actually smaller. A waiter I worked with came to the job one day and announced that he just got paid for selling a house he had listed. He showed me the check and I saw it was for $1,400.00. ( average annual salary was $15,000 in 1978
this was a lot of money) I called home and told DeEtte that I wanted to get paid with checks that had commas in them. Once again she supported me with the idea of attending Real Estate School and going into the business. We counted our pennies and decided we could do it. It took me three years from getting my license until I worked real estate full time. The rest is history. The best part of this story was the fact that the waiter Marc Broways stayed a friend for many years. He actually listed and bought several homes from me. However as an agent that was the one and only sale he ever made and it turned out to be his mother in law’s condominium. That is why I always say timing is everything and a little Irish luck doesn’t hurt!
