What are some of your childhood accomplishments?


It’s hard to remember some of the things that happened so long ago. I remember one that has turned out to be a great story about Nana and me. When we were in the same school Sunrise Acres they had a costumes contest and we all wore our favorite costumes. Nana wore a beautiful princess fairy costume and I went as the man from Mars. We all walked around the playground as judges picked the best out of all the entries. At the time I did not know Nana, but her and I were pick to be the last two left. The one that got picked as the best got to go to Howdy Duffy Time on TV this was a very very big deal. Well after a lot of consideration the panel of judges picked one and only man from outer space so I won and Nana lost!
One other time I remember in 7th grade after football season we had an awards dinner and I received the offensive lineman award I was pretty excited about it. There were other things but those are my favorites. Oh and by the way we did not figure it out about the costume contest until many years after we were married that DeEtte was the fairy and I was the spaceman small world.

What was your Dad like when you were a child?

I remember a lot of good things about my father. The fact I was born on his birthday didn’t hurt. He always treated me different then the rest of the family taking me with him to go to the fight at the Silver Slipper of to friends home to learn a new card scam. But as far as him being a father he was not the best for the rest of my brothers and my mother. He was heavy drinker and very abusing to those around him! This was a man that was like Jekyl and Hyde one moment he would be happy and nice then a half bottle of whiskey latter he would be hitting my mother and breaking her nose. I love my dad but at the same time I have no respect for him all because he could not handle his addiction to alcohol. What's a small decision you made that ended up having a big impact on your life?

  Actually there are two small decisions that changed my life and the lives of my family. The first one was the decision to go to work for Collins Foods in Los Angeles.( at the time I made this decision I was working at the Mint Hotel and had been there for 7 years in a very secure job ) I saw an ad in the newspaper for trainees to run Sizzler Steak Houses. I took the interview and they gave me an aptitude test. I scored higher than any of the others for the position and was offered the job. The only problem was I had to be in Los Angeles in just two weeks! We owned a house and had two small children at the time. I told DeEtte that we needed to sell the house and find a place to live in California in less than fourteen days. She got on the band wagon and we did just that. In two weeks we packed up all we had including Jeff and Jennifer and moved to the state of California. What is some of the best advice your mother ever gave you?

  I have to begin this story with a little background on one of the most amazing women that ever lived my mom. She was born in Salt Lake City on Nov 5 1922 then moved to Long Island NY where she grew up. Her father had been affected by the gas bombs of WW1 and was confined to a VA hospital for the next 40 years. So my mom was raised in a single parent family with little to no money. Her mother cleaned houses to make ends meet. She lived thru the Great Depression and when WW 2 began she joined the Marines. This is where she met and married my dad a fellow Marine Unfortunately, after their marriage, she was never welcome home again. Her family completely disowned her for the remainder of her life. My father was a very difficult person to live with at times and often treated her very badly both mentally and physically especially when he was drinking which happened way too often This is why my mom is so great.
